A Few Rome Trip Ideas

As you know, a while back, I was lucky to go on a cruise that left from Rome. Unfortunately, I saw very little of the city. The timing of my flights and cruise meant I just traveled straight from the airport to the port. However, one day I will be going back, so if I see a travel article about this ancient city I tend to read it and make a mental note of anywhere that catches my imagination. It is getting to be quite a long list, so I thought it was time to write a few of them down and share them with you.

Experience opera in the open-air

If you want to go to the opera in Rome, it really is worth waiting until the summer months. During the warmer months, the city´s various opera companies perform outdoors. The biggest venue is the ancient Baths of Caracalla. This is a very atmospheric and special venue, yet the tickets do not cost much. Some of the other companies occasionally perform in other places including local sports stadiums and churchyards.

Throw a coin in the Trevi fountain

A trip to Rome would not be complete with a visit to the Trevi Fountain. Very few visitors pass up the chance to throw a coin in the water and make a wish.

Wander around the Colosseum

A visit to the Colosseum is also on the list. But, apparently, it gets very busy. So, if you do plan to go, be sure to pre-book, especially if you want to take the underground tour. You can find out the best way to do this by clicking here.

Take a food tour

I am a real sucker for a food tour. It really is one of the best ways to experience the cuisine of a city. There are plenty of food tours of Rome to choose between and from the looks of the reviews, most of them are excellent.

If you want an authentic experience, it can be worth looking for a “dine with a local” style tour. Usually, you will only eat in one restaurant, but you are going to learn a lot about the city and see it through the eyes of someone who actually lives there.

Learn to cook like a native of Rome

While on the subject of food, I also quite fancy the idea of taking a cooking class. Learning how to make pasta or a pizza from a local Roman cook is quite appealing.

Visit some of Rome´s beautiful buildings

As you would expect, Rome is full of beautiful and interesting buildings, so visiting a few of them is certainly on my list. In all likelihood, I will take in all of the usual spots including The Pantheon, St Paul´s Basilica, The Spanish Steps and Santa Maria Maggiore. But, I also plan to visit some of the more unusual sights like the pyramid and the monkey tower.

Now, that is not everything I have my list. But, hopefully, it is enough to give you a taste of what this city has to offer and help you to come up with an itinerary for your visit to this beautiful place.
