Travel Time: 5 Fun Places to Visit In the Northeast

Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

Are you daydreaming about your next vacation?

When considering your list of possibilities, remember that there are lots of fun places to visit in the Northeast.

No matter what your interests are, there is something for everyone in the region – seaside towns, outdoor adventures, and bustling cities.

Here are five fun places to consider for your next trip.

1. Ithaca, New York

Located in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, Ithaca is the ideal vacation spot for the outdoorsy type.

Hiking is a popular pastime in this small, active city known for its breathtaking gorges and dramatic waterfalls. There are many state parks, preserves, and trails that draw visitors from around the world.

You’ll find other fun things to do as well. Stroll through the various outdoor markets and don’t miss the expansive Ithaca Farmers Market. Stop by some of the city’s art galleries and museums. And make sure you check out charming downtown Ithaca, which boasts a bevy of bars, restaurants, and small shops.

It’s also a short drive from other quaint upstate cities as well as Canada.

2. Cape May, New Jersey

Known for its beautiful beaches and fun boardwalks, this seaside resort is a great spot for families. There’s plenty of kid-friendly activities, such as miniature golf, arcades, casual restaurants, ice cream shops, and more.

For adults, enjoy a night on the town and any of the numerous beach bars. If you want to spend some time off the beach, you’ll also want to check out these wineries for a low-key afternoon of drinking wine in a relaxed atmosphere.

Cape May is also known for its Victorian architecture. You can tour many of the historic homes in the beach town, but the Emlen Physick Estate, a Victorian house museum, is a must-visit spot.

3. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

When considering the best cities in the Northeast to visit, not everyone automatically thinks of Philadelphia.

But why not? Philly boasts just as rich a history as Boston, and just as many cultural opportunities as New York City. Despite all it has to offer visitors, it’s still sometimes forgotten when compared to these behemoths.

There’s plenty to see and do when vacationing in the City of Brotherly Love, whether you’re visiting for just a few days or a longer period of time.

History buffs will love the chance to visit the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and the Betsy Ross House. Sports fans will be drawn to the numerous professional teams that call the city home. Or maybe you just want to shop, eat, and drink your way along South Street, soaking in the local flavor.

4. Montauk, New York

At the very tip of Long Island’s southern fork lies Montauk. This scenic village is a breath of fresh air compared to its opulent Hamptons neighbors – Southampton, East Hampton, and Westhampton.

With six state parks, Montauk has more than 5,000 acres of beaches and green space to explore. In addition to biking and hiking, you’ll want to make sure you visit the famed Montauk Lighthouse.

Saltwater fishing rules the roost in this relaxed village. Whether for sport or business, Montauk has long been one of the most popular fishing spots in the Northeast.

If you’re looking for evening activities, there are also plenty of restaurants and bars to grab some excellent seafood or a drink.

5. Salem, Massachusetts

Known for its witch trials in the late 1600s, this spooky coastal city plays up that part of its history. In fact, Salem is even called Witch City.

Visitors will be charmed by tourist attractions like the Witch Museum and Witch Dungeon. And you’ll

want to take one of the evening ghost tours through the city.

There’s also a lot of arts and culture in Salem, and its cute downtown is filled to the brim with unique shops, restaurants, bars, museums, and historical sites.
